The Story of Darboni

Darboni is a 65 years old woman living in Kumasi, paralyzed and suffering from a car accident. After the years of a happy marriage with 4 children, she lost her husband. Life became difficult for her while living in the northern part of Ghana.

No Soul Left Behind

Her children could not continue their education which caused them to migrate to other parts of the country to start a life for themselves. As a muslim living in the North, she decided to move to the city of Kumasi, where she could relate to a muslim community to find some job to do.

She started well with a small market job until she was struck by sickness, after being involved in a car accident.

Since the accident, she could not work anymore neither did she have any income to pay for medical treatment. This has left her paralyzed.

Darboni lost contact with her children and relatives for a long time, and it has become very difficult to trace her children. Since she has no income, a volunteer rendered support to her by allowing her to lodge at the balcony of his room apartment.

Darboni’s problem became worse as she couldn’t care for her self anymore.

As a grown woman, she would love to go back to her relatives in the North where she started her life earlier on. Her culture was not ready to accept her in the community in this state. According to her story, it is an abomination in her culture for women at her age to have such sickness. If she dares to go back to her community she will be cast out to the witches camp and be declared as a witch. She might even loose her life because of her current condition. Their believe is that, such a woman will bring bad luck to the community and her situation is a curse to the society.

CWAF did an investigation and found out that her culture still exists and has been banded several times by the government of Ghana. However this is still carried on. Click here to read more on this.

During this difficult period, an evangelical group from the RPLM church in Kumasi brought a visit to the old lady and prayed for her. During this encounter she gave her life to Christ and was converted to Christianity. The evangelical group which is led by Evangelist Rita kept a regular check up on Darboni to clean her up and pray for her healing.

Through Ev. Rita, we visited the residence of Darboni after hearing the sad story. After our visit we concluded that a tremendous change and care needed to be rendered to Darboni in order to be on her feet.

During the time that the evangelist went to visit Darboni, she made some radio announcement that traced one of her daughters who is now married with children.

She is a house wife and her husband is a farmer. They live in a village near Kumasi in a one room cottage together with their children.

On the first day of treatment we invited her daughter to come from the village so that she can accompany us to the herbal center.

On the costs of CWAF, Darboni was brought to a herbal & physical therapist to help recover from the paralyses. This procedure of therapy was going to take a period of time before Darboni could walk again.

After three weeks of treatment, Darboni could move on her feet, which she couldn’t do before the treatment.

At the moment she needs good shelter because she is not allowed to live any longer at the balcony where she resides.

A shelter for Darboni in a cheap community will cost € 600 (for 4 years rent).

We call on sponsorship to help support Darboni.
