Francis Needs Your Help

An urgent operation is needed for Francis Atta Baafi to save his life. Francis is a boy of 2,5 years old and is the twin brother of Francisca Atta Baafi. His father, Frank Kwadwo Baafi is a small land scale farmer and his mother, Christiana Mike is into small scale trading at the market. They live in a small village in the central region of Ghana known as Twifo-praso.

Last year in February, Francis took in an acid chemical substance while he was playing around in his village. He thought it was a soda drink. Francis began to vomit blood and his mother was in shock when she saw what happened to her son.

His father was notified immediately and rushed him quickly to a nearby clinic, which later transferred him to the major hospital in Kumasi known as Komfo-Anokye Teaching Hospital-Kumasi.

While the doctors examined the incident, their solution was to have an immediate operation to prevent the child from losing his life.

Such an operation was very costly and the family had to sell their belongings. In addition they borrowed money to pay for the operation. It was successful but it left the family in need.

Their misery did not end there.

After the operation, Francis was in a coma for 1 week and after becoming conscious he had to go through numerous medical treatments to recover.

Francis was now able to live but he could only live on a porridge feeding through a tube connection to the side of his stomach.

He could no more be fed through the throat because of the damage the acid has caused to his throat.

Since February after the operation, he has been surviving through the feeding of porridge through the feeding tube.

The disadvantage of such feeding is that, the tube sometimes blocks and it causes him to bleed externally and internally. He also can’t sleep on the side of the tube and always needs to lay on his back. His mother and father who have been taking care of him can’t bring him to school or leave him with anyone or even have rest until he is finally put to sleep together with his twin sister.

Now, there is an urgent operation needed known as a cardiovascular surgery. This is a very complex operation because it requires cutting a piece of the intestines of Francis and placing it in the throat where the damage is. Due to complications that surround the surgery of Atta known as cardiothoracic surgery, Atta have to be transferred to the Netherlands hospital for the final operation. This requires a lot of finances. Prof. Dr. Van der Zee, a surgeon at the Wilhelmina Childrens Hospital Utrecht, has been found willing to do the operation. Francis currently has suffered from the wound at his stomach (due to the tube connector placed there) and if the surgery is not done, Francis will eventually almost certainly die.

We have requested a quotation for the cost of such an operation. The cost is approximately 50,000.00 euros including the travel expenses.

Help is needed to raise this money and save the life of Francis. We are pleading for support to save him. All small gifts together can help.
